Concord takes flight with London's Emirates airline

The UK’s first urban cable car, Emirates Air Line, has seen nearly three-million visitors pass through its gates and across the River Thames. Offering spectacular views of London’s skyline, while transporting up to 2,500 people per hour, the Transport for London project benefits from Concord indoor and Simes outdoor lighting solutions.

Adding to the continuing regeneration of east London, the Emirates Air Line is made up of three Buro Happold designed towers, each over 60 metres in height and can transport pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users across the river in under 10 minutes, between the two stations at Greenwich Peninsula (South) & Royal Docks (North). Working with T Clarke to light the project, the station structures achieve a ‘floating’ effect using a special version of the SIMES MINILINEAR LED to create a beautiful and uniform distribution of light over the entire glass surface. Meanwhile the station walkways are lit with the SIMES SLOT luminaires and the towers used SIMES FOCUS and MEGA FOCUS LED projectors are installed at the base and at the top of the spiral structures to create beams of concentric light to fill the hollow spaces.

Concord’s Officelyte luminaires can also be found in the Emirates Air Line’s ticket office, providing aesthetically pleasing and high-quality work-zone light output for staff processing ticket applications. Additionally 40 Concord Brios line the top of the towers’ service gantries. The scheme is completed using Sylvania and Lumiance luminaires also from the Havells Sylvania portfolio with 50 Sylvania Sylproof Superia luminaires installed within the store and plant areas and 210 metres of Lumiance Lumistrip providing exceptional public light under a total of 42 waiting benches.

“We’re so pleased to have our whole portfolio range and branding laced within this high-profile project”, says Darren Ling, Havells-Sylvania’s Sales Manager for the Emirates Air Line project. “Our involvement within the Emirates Air Lines demonstrates just how versatile Havells-Sylvania is as a manufacturer and supplier within the lighting industry and we are looking forward to being involved within similar projects in the future.”

Speaking about the project, London’s Mayor, Boris Johnson called it a "stunning addition to London's transport network" and a "must-see destination in its own right". The service operates throughout the week from 7am to 9pm, on Saturdays from 8am to 9pm and on Sundays from 9am to 9pm.
